Day 4 – Havana – Las Terrazas – Coffee Plantation – Vinales Valley.
8am. Departure from your hotel in Havana and travel through the exclusive Playa district, where most Ambassadors’ residences are located – the architecture is remarkable in this part of town. Once you have left Havana behind, the road is straight all the way through with very little traffic. About one hour later, you will be entering into the rural province of Pinar Del Rio where your first stop will be at Las Terrazas, a UNESCO preserved Eco Reserve. Las Terrazas is a small village or community with a beautiful lake surrounded by forested hills. It is in these hills that Che Guevara trained his revolutionaries to successfully defend Cuba against the US backed invasion at the Bay of Pigs a significant world event in the 1960’s.
After a brief introduction to the workings of the Reserve – one of the most important in Latin America, you will be visiting a partially restored coffee plantation house set on the hilltop with great views to the coast. Here you will learn a little about Cuba’s association with coffee production and the slave trade. Returning to the village of Las Terrazas, the more adventurous can take an exhilarating wire canopy tour through the tree tops and across the lake. There will also be time to explore the village, enjoy a lovely coffee and snack at Maria’s coffee shop or browse the local artisan workshops.
Continuing down the “autopista” you will then take the road to Vinales and climb up into the mountains towards the spectacular Vinales Valley, terminating at your chosen hotel just after 3pm.
Two nights in a Tropical room with views across Vinales Valley on Bed and Breakfast basis at Hotel Los Jazmines, Pinar del Rio province.
Day 5 – All About Vinales Valley.
Full day free at leisure to relax and absorb the natural beauty of the area. Daily optional excursions from Vinales include horse riding through the most scenic Valley in Cuba or a day trip to nearby Cayo Levisa Island.
Day 6 – Vinales – Soroa Waterfalls – Sierra del Rosario Mountains – Zapata National Park – Guama Indian Reserve – Bay of Pigs – Cueva de los Peces – Cienfuegos – Trinidad.
7.30am early departure from Hotel Los Jazmines. Travel East through the beautiful Vinales Valley, taking a short detour along the motorway to visit the Botanical Gardens at Soroa, where the largest collection of Orchids can be found in Latin America. With magnificent views of the rolling palm clad hills of the Sierra Del Rosario the gardens are beautiful and contain over 700 species of Orchid alone. Enjoy a short walk to the impressive Soroa waterfall in a tranquil setting in a small sub-tropical valley.
Continue your journey South East through the Sugar Cane and Citrus plantations towards the UNESCO preserved Zapata National Park where you will be stopping at Guama.
Guama is a replica village of Cuba’s earliest settlers the Taino Indians who lived on the island in the 1100s, the original settlers on the island. Located on a string of small islands and reached by an exhilarating boat ride through the mangroves, there are also a number of life size sculptures depicting the life of these early settlers. A crocodile sanctuary is also located here and you can enter the sanctuary to see the reptiles basking in the sun .
Continue your journey into the Zapata National Park, reaching the Bay of Pigs, the site of the failed CIA backed invasion of Cuba that was repelled by Fidel and Che and their revolutionaries. Visit the museum to gain an insight into one of the major world events from the 1960s and an important date in Cuba’s revolutionary history.
After a relaxing lunch in the area, travel along the South coast as the afternoon progresses and stop at a wonderful oasis of Cueva De Los Peces, a natural salt water pool set in a beautiful and tranquil woodland location. Take an afternoon cooling swim in the waters and spot the huge variety of tropical fish or take a cocktail or a cool beer and sit and enjoy the sun for a while.
Your final stop of the day will be at Cienfuegos, also known as the Pearl of the South, with a strong French colonial vibe and overlooking a beautiful bay. Explore on foot the pebbled streets around the main central square and along the “Malecon” promenade before continuing along the coast road to Trinidad, where you will terminate at your chosen hotel just before dinner time.
Two nights accommodation in a double room on B&B basis at Casa Buri y Nesti, Trinidad Old Town.
Day 7 – All About Trinidad.
Spend a full day enjoying Trinidad, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Day 8 – Trinidad – Topes de Collantes – Escambray Mountains – Santa Clara – Varadero.
8am departure from your hotel in Trinidad, heading for the nearby Escambray Mountain range, an area of outstanding natural beauty, spectacular views and one of the most scenic drives in Cuba! Stop en route at the viewpoint looking back at the colonial city of Trinidad and the shimmering Caribbean Sea. Continue deeper into the mountains and pass by simple farmhouses surrounded by sub-tropical vegetation and tall Royal Palms before stopping at the Contemporary Art Museum for a short visit. Housed in the former mansion of a Cuban Senator, the museum houses over 800 pieces from the very best of Cuba’s world famous artists.
After visiting the art gallery, it’s time for a coffee stop and where better than the Casa Del Cafe a rustic coffee shop selling a great choice of locally grown coffee, have one with a nice splash of Cuban rum. Learn about the history and growing processes of Cuban coffee. Your journey continues through the mountains, passing by numerous small rural villages until reaching Santa Clara, a city of major historical significance.
Visit “Tren Blindado”, the train that was attacked by Che Guevara and the turning point in the Cuban Revolution as well as the final resting place of Che Guevara at the very symbolic Che Mausoleum. There will also be time to visit a museum dedicated to his life before we head for lunch in the city.
